so you read novel? is it true that this one has a tragic or rather lonely ending?

lonely, he leaves the universe by himself to go to higher realm, I hate novels that ends like this, which is why some people didnt like it when I said Luo Feng became a dickless monk, since in a way he left his family what is the point of marrying Xu Xin and having a family, it tries to be Dragon Ball, but yet it doesnt do it well in the relationship department
Having said that the donghua doesnt always follow the novel, there's been a lot of changes, like in the donghua the monsters were caused by a virus while the novel never mentions a virus, just a great disaster, probably a nuclear explosion

Actually you can also put it in another perspective that is when somebody travel to a new foreign places they always travel alone first. Then they either bring their family there if they find the place hospitable or start a new family.

Sadly unlike Doupo Cangqiong the novel is very definite about it since Xu Xin doesnt like to cultivate and there is no way he could use materials to boost her to the level that is required to ascend to the higher realm, in fact it is very very difficult to ascend to the higher realm, since he is probably the first one in multiple eras to be able to do so out of the millions of talented cultivators
Fanren is the same, Han Li leaves Nangong Wan in order to ascend to a higher realm at the end of the novel, it was only the sequel that had them get back together and implied that they had a daughter

When an anime series have about 20 or more episodes it means the entire series will be completed in about 1 year 365 days, so every year new anime come out and last about 1 year and we all get to watch new anime every year and some anime series last a few months then new anime come out.
